The youth that come to Medicine Horse Ranch (MHR) have many challenges, including poverty, gangs, early pregnancy, English language barriers, low academic achievement, and substance abuse. Equine-Guided Learning Programs (EGL) are particularly effective with these adolescents because it fosters healthy self-esteem and strong self-management and communication skills. Teens are “herd” animals themselves, and soak in the lessons from the horses in ways that traditional school settings can never provide.

Horse Sense for Teens-at-Risk™

LEARN MORE

Since 2003, Horse Sense for Teens At-Risk has been providing expert Equine-Guided Learning Programs to at-risk teens in the San Francisco Bay Area. The program was initiated through a partnership with the Novato Youth Center (NYC) teen pregnancy prevention staff who were searching for exceptional experiential educational opportunities for Latino youth. From the initial pilot of just 6 young women, Horse Sense anticipates serving over 200 young women and men in the 2009-2010 school year, as well as additional at-risk youth from homeless, gang prevention, and eating disorder programs. Horse Sense programs are particularly effective with at-risk youth because they tap into the adolescent developmental needs to belong, test boundaries, and learn personal integrity. Activities are innovative, engaging the youth in a dynamic learning environment that encourages personal growth and reflection.

NEWS & EVENTS

Horse Sense for Readers™ Literacy pilot program launched on July 2, 2011 with 9, 6th grade Latino boys and girls (reading at a 3rd grade level).  In only 4 short months we saw dramatic and positive changes in reading comprehension; in reading fluency; in writing and academic performance; in self esteem and confidence; in socio-emotional skills; and in handling frustration.  The kids also mastered horse handling and riding at the walk and jog trot.

Horse Sense for Readers will offer a 6- month after school and Saturday program beginning June 2012 at Medicine Horse Ranch, Tomales CA.  Our 42- week program benefits 3rd-5th graders scoring on required state tests of the language arts at "Basic" or "Below".

Our goal is academic intervention using equine-guided experiential learning, cultural enrichment, expressive arts, career exposure, horsemanship, riding and family involvement.
